Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The BTC Cup is a Group 1 Australian thoroughbred Weight for Age horse race, run over a distance of 1200 metres at Doomben Racecourse, Brisbane in April/May.

It is the ideal lead up race to one of the bigger races of the Brisbane winter which is the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 over 1350 metres in a fortnight at Doomben.

The BTC Cup was first ran in 1964 and from 1983 to 1990 the race was actually run over a distance of 1350 meters before moving back to the traditional 1200 meters.

Over the years the BTC Cup has actually had many different names including the Fosters Cup from 1995-1998, the Carlton Cup from 1999-2001, and the Wyndham Estate Cup in 2003.
